Shimano 105 Groupset History

RX-100 - Reported to be the same as the 105 group except for finish. RSX - A lower-priced but well-constructed group with drop-bar brake/shift lever: 7-speed rear indexing, and front indexing for triple chainwheels. The front shifter also works with Sachs 3 x 7 internal-gear hubs. Shimano 105 used to be the workhorse of the Shimano range, slightly lacking in glamour but it would get the job done. Then came the 5600 ten-speed incarnation, and now it’s available in black. The group was introduced in 1983 as 105, from 1989 it was called 105 SC and since 1999 105 again. Today's standard of the groupset is the 11-speed gearshift and Hollowtech II bottom bracket or cranks (7000 series) (by 2019). The Shimano 105 road bike group came in a first version in 1980 on the market.

Since its introduction as a groupset to showcase Shimano's new technology of 1986, the 105 has taken its place as the most affordable high end groupset made by Shimano. Although it typically follows Dura Ace by a year in development, it does benefit from advances that are first introduced on the DA groupset.
